Babbar riga continues to be the main wear-type by men in Northern Nigeria. Traditionally, the babbar riga is a three-piece ensemble. The attire is mainly made in cotton fabrics – mainly “shadda”. They are usually cool to wear in the North of Nigeria where temperatures can go up to 50 degrees.

Historically, they were worn by older men. However, babbar riga is popular with younger men and boys during celebrations like the Eid, naming ceremonies, weddings, etc.

The embroidery on babbar riga were traditionally made by hand, but today, intricate and elaborate designs are made with special embroidery machines.
