Over 700,000 people commit suicide Annually – WHO

The World Health Organisation has said that over 700,000 people globally commit suicide every year, with 77 percent of all global suicides occurring in low and middle-income countries.

Walter Kazadi Mulombo, WHO Nigeria Country Representative, disclosed this Sunday in a statement to mark this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day.

He revealed that for every suicide, there are likely 20 other people making suicide attempts and many more harbouring serious thoughts of ending their lives.

Nigeria has a suicide rate of about 17.3 in every 100 000 poplulation – one of the highest among African countries.
