President Muhammadu Buhari has made his last Nigeria Independence Anniversary speech as his tenure comes to a close.

The Independence day broadcast has become traditional, as it is an annual event. Presidents usually use it as an opportunity to address issues as well as give a summary of the progress achieved within the past year.

In a rather sombre mood, Buhari said he wants to reiterate his call to the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities to return to the classroom, “while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available.”

Buhari went on to say his administration has made “appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years.”
