Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that lack of trust in the electoral process is the reason behind the high cost of elections in Nigeria.
Yakubu said this on Friday at an interactive session with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Lagos. According to him, 60 percent of election funds are spent on logistics and personnel allowances.
He explained, “we print ballots papers in currency quality and we entrust them to the Central Bank of Nigeria.” They are then “moved with all the protocols and security according to the movement of the national currency, just to protect the process.”
The 2023 elections will cost Nigeria N305 billion.
