FG drags ASUU to court

The Federal Government of Nigeria has dragged the Academic Staff Union of Universities to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Abuja, over the prolonged strike of the union.

A leaked letter addressed to the Registrar of the Court dated September 8, signed by Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, partly read: “In view of the fact that ASUU members have been on strike since February 14, 2022 and have refused to cull off the action despite apprehension of same, it would be appreciated if this dispute is given an accelerated hearing in order to bring the dispute to an end.”

ASUU have been on strike for the past 7 months over issues of improved salary and general welfare. This latest development is seen by observers as a sign that negotiations between ASUU and the Federal Government may have reached a staccato.
