Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has announced his retirement from professional football after a 20-year professional career. Mikel made the announcement on Tuesday on his social media handle.
He began his career with the Plateau United club. At the age of 17, he joined Norwegian club Lyn. He then transferred to English cub Chelsea, where he stayed for eleven years. He also played for Middlesbrough and Stoke City clubs.
Mikel has played almost 100 times for Nigeria. He is popular not just in his home country, but in many countries of the world. He retired at the age of 35.
In his goodbye message Mikel said, “All of this would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, teammates and most importantly my ever-loyal fans.”
